Summary

Transformer Standards of most countries, like the proposed I.E.C.'s International Standards, require that transformers shall be able to withstand specified short-circuit currents for a certain time. For the contractor these specifications are an absolute condition which must be met, and it requires that he has reliable methods for the calculation of the acting forces.

The present report deals with investigation and calculation of axial forces, which are produced in core-type transformers with concentric windings as a result of short circuits.

It gives a summary of the various methods of design which can be applied to symmetrical and especially asymmetrical windings. It deals with the distribution of the forces in the windings as well as the end thrust which the winding exerts on the core-yoke and the end clamping device. The theoretical work is supported by measurements, which are referred to.
