Summary

Ageing of electrical machines is associated with the thermal life and fatigue of the active components. There are many strategic machines in power systems that have surpassed normal design life criteria, reasonably and initially proposed as 40 years. Some applications are certainly more stressful than others, the nature of the application, high speed steam or gas turbine, low speed waterwheel, synchronous condenser has effect on both fatigue and thermal ageing.

Reliability centred maintenance and the associated regime of condition monitoring are the tools that provide ongoing reliable operation of these ageing assets. Understanding operating risk provides engineering diligence to maintain the operation of these machines. The question asked is “Can a machine built in 1975 perform reliably for the next 15 years (Currently 50) to physical age 65 years?”

To answer this question consideration is required of:

• The machine design and operating stress levels.

• The machine operating hours and number of starts and cycles, temperatures and running vibration levels.

• Maintenance and history of failures, local repairs and,

• Condition monitoring results.

The failure and ageing mechanisms are derived and assigned a score related to the likelihood that the mechanism exists and the seriousness of that risk to operating reliability.

An overall risk rank is calculated and used as a measure of expended life.

The derived risk rank is considered with respect to the design life of the machine, and the expended life is determined to answer a question, such as: “Can a machine built in 1975 perform reliably for the next 15 years (Currently 50) to physical age 65 years?”

This paper demonstrates the process used to determine a diligent engineering opinion for the forward life integrity of the machine. A case study is included.
