Summary

During factory acceptance testing of large power transformers, occasionally dielectric failures may occur. To repair the failure, its location must be found. In recent years the locations of breakdown, due to Lightning Impulse, LI, and Switching Impulse, SI, have been successfully found using acoustic emission sensors. This paper discusses 2 different cases, one LI and one

SI breakdown.

The two FAT cases in this document, show that the used fiber optic acoustic emission sensors can be used to directly detect the fault location of a breakdown during transient testing, thereby significantly reducing test and investigation time needed to find such location.
