Summary

Transformer test bays play a critical role in ensuring the quality, reliability, and compliance of power transformers prior to commissioning. Increasing transformer complexity, growing customer requirements, and stricter demands for traceability and standardization expose the limitations of conventional test bay concepts based on fragmented tools and manual workflows.

In this context, digitalization of transformer test bays has become a key enabler for improving testing efficiency, data integrity, and lifecycle-oriented use of test results.

This paper presents a unified digital platform for transformer test bay digitalization, focusing on end-to-end automation of testing workflows. The goal of the proposed approach is to integrate all phases of the testing process—pre-test preparation, test execution, and post-test data processing—into a single, coherent digital environment. The platform replaces multiple standalone tools and manual procedures with standardized digital workflows, centralized data management, and automated processing.

The presented concept covers digital preparation and configuration of test workflows, guided and automated execution of test sequences, and structured acquisition of measurement data from both modern and legacy measurement equipment. Post-test activities include automated data validation, standard-compliant processing in accordance with IEC and IEEE standards, integrated measurement uncertainty evaluation, standardized report generation, and full traceability of all test results. The approach is illustrated by practical implementation examples in a transformer test bay environment.

The results demonstrate that digitalization of test bay workflows significantly improves standardization, repeatability, and transparency of transformer testing. Automated processes reduce manual effort and the risk of human error, while centralized and structured data storage 1 enhances auditability and long-term usability of test results. Measurement uncertainty calculation and standardized reporting contribute to improved consistency and reliability of test outcomes.

Beyond factory acceptance testing, the paper shows how the digitalized test bay concept can be extended to site acceptance testing, operational monitoring, quality control, and research and development activities. By providing a scalable and standardized digital foundation, the unified platform enables lifecycle-oriented analysis and supports future developments such as advanced analytics and digital twin applications.
