Summary

The design of extra high voltage (EHV) gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) bays varies depending on whether the substation is an extension to existing GIS bays. Additional GIS bays as extensions are often required in substations located in power generating stations and transmission networks. The Integrating GIS equipment as an extension bay to existing GIS requires special considerations in engineering, installation, and commissioning, including site testing. To design and integrate such extension bays, it is essential to understand the design of the existing GIS bus and parameters of bay configurations such as,

 Phase distance (Linear & Axial)

Orientation of the double bus arrangement

Single line diagram (SLD)

Gas circuit breaker (GCB) mounting arrangement (vertical or horizontal)

Termination equipment (GIB) through gas-to-cable or gas-to-air bushing. This paper considers two types of 245 kV GIS configurations to demonstrate the integration of extension bays and GIBs to the existing GIS bays. The paper discusses in detail the design of an interface module proposed to integrate the extension bay with the existing GIS double bus bar system. It further elaborates on the power frequency and partial discharge (PD) testing of 245 kV GIS modules and the full GIS bay in accordance with IEC 62271-203 requirements.
