Summary

Gas insulated switchgears (GIS) forms one of the most critical assets across the global power system network. However, insulation degradation due to partial discharges (PD) within the insulation poses a severe risk, potentially escalating to arc flashes, equipment failures, and widespread outages if not addressed promptly. In the Indian context, NHPC's internal analysis reveals that GIS failure rates are higher than the global failure rate documented in CIGRE surveys/report[9]. The higher failure rates may be attributed to umpteen number of reasons ranging from manufacturing variances, transportation/preservation/installation challenges in diverse terrains to operational stresses. This disparity underlines the imperative for robust diagnostic strategies for early defect identification thereby mitigating power supply outages.

This paper, drawing from NHPC’s experience (83 operational GIS bays and 82 bays under installation), aims to highlight the role of continuous online PD monitoring in early fault detection, enhancement of reliability and prevention of damage. It explores corelation of PD spectrogram. data from protection Intelligent Electronics Devices(IEDs), Sequence of

Events(SOEs) from SCADA and AI application, duly informed by standards like IEEE, CIGRE

& OEM guidelines etc. to provide utilities with actionable insights for optimizing asset life and explore options for retrofitting of older fleets with online diagnostics. The paper also showcases how catastrophic failure was successfully avoided in a 200 MW Generating Hydro Unit of a 1 800 MW hydro power plant, just by utilizing online PD data, waveforms of protection IEDs and SOEs from SCADA.
