Summary

In EHV transmission systems, auto-reclose is a critical protection feature for maintaining system availability during transient faults. In practice, it has been observed that auto-reclose failure often occurs due to incorrect configuration, logic mismatch, or wiring issues in autoreclose relays. Testing and troubleshooting of auto-reclose relays in online condition is difficult and carries the risk of unwanted line tripping and repeated Circuit Breaker operations.

This paper describes the development of an Auto-Reclose Simulator Kit designed for offline testing of auto-reclose relays in a test laboratory environment. The simulator kit allows simulation of various auto-reclose conditions such as single-phase tripping, dead time, reclaim time, priority auto-reclose logic, blocking conditions, and fault scenarios without involving live transmission lines. Use of the simulator kit has helped in reducing unnecessary outages, minimizing Circuit Breaker operations, and saving shutdown time during troubleshooting and testing of auto-reclose relays.
