Summary

The objective of this article is to describe the main conclusions and problems highlighted in the

Workshop on the impact of inverter-based energy sources on the Protection, Automation, and

Control systems of the BIPS (Brazilian Interconnected Power System) facilities. This event was held by the CIGRE's B5 Study Committee on Protection and Automation, with the support of the ONS (Brazilian Power System Operator), in June 2024. The event included presentations from wind turbine manufacturers, representatives of wind and solar power plants, manufacturers of protection devices, transmission and distribution companies, representatives of research centres and universities, as well as the ONS itself. This workshop evaluated the technical and operational impacts of inverters on the system, as well as the challenges and solutions to ensure electrical stability and security in an environment with high penetration of renewable energies, and the reliability of the protection systems for the connections of these sources, focusing on the impact on protection systems.
