Summary

Currently, a significant part of renewable energy sources (RES), such as wind farms and solar power plants, are integrated into the power system via inverter converters. Inverter-based resources have current source properties, which distinguishes them from electromotive force power sources with relatively low internal impedance.

The paper based on data obtained from operating power facilities. It provides an analysis of the possibility of applying classical relay protection devices with absolute and relative selectivity on transmission lines adjacent to a substation with an electricity source connected to the electrical grid through an inverter.

For substations with RES, a hybrid protection algorithm is recommended when a highfrequency communication channel is available. This algorithm ensures selectivity by determining the direction of fault power flow during faults on or beyond the protected line and beyond the substation busbars with connected inverter-based resource.
