Summary

Digital substations have already reached an advanced level of development, providing a large quantity of engineering and operational information. However, in practice, this information is not fully exploited. The data is available, but often used reactively and interpreted only by a small group of specialists. This disparity between the available data and its use affects the efficiency, repair, and troubleshooting of DSOs/TSOs, which are also undergoing staff turnover and need to shorten the learning curve for new personnel.

This paper presents an approach to improve the practical use of available information by organizing specific IEC 61850 data in a structured and interpretable way.. The tool combines substation traffic monitoring solutions such as GOOSE or MMS, variable monitoring with model discovery or polling functions, configuration validation between engineering files and the settings present in substation devices, and a user-defined alarm function that allows device behaviour to be monitored. This approach also integrates an event log that collects the events captured in the various modules mentioned above.

Overall, the proposed tool contributes to a more efficient commissioning and troubleshooting, while promoting knowledge retention and transfer by reducing dependence on specialized protocol knowledge and presenting information in a user-friendly way during engineering and operational tasks.
