Summary

The energy transition is leading to a massive grid extension accompanied by a modernization wave, necessitating the design, engineering and execution of numerous projects in the coming years. To manage this efficiently and sustainably over the next decades, standardized processes and substation configurations are critical for system operators. Additionally, improving consistency and security, reducing errors, supporting automation and facilitating learning curves and knowledge management are mandatory. However, the current landscape of engineering tools is highly fragmented, with IEC 61850 being implemented in multiple, often incompatible dialects. This complexity, combined with the inherent intricacies (not selfexplaining), creates substantial challenges for newcomers, students, experts, transmission and distribution system operators (TSOs/DSOs), who require solutions that are easily understandable, harmonized, transparent, and flexible.

Addressing these challenges, the paper presents the open-source project OpenSCD, a vendoragnostic, standards-compliant, progressive web application (PWA) for IEC 61850 implementation, coherent with ENTSO-E Vendor-Agnostic System (VAS) principles and its dedicated plugin for process and knowledge management. OpenSCD is designed to fulfill the industry’s and system operators’ need for a unified engineering environment by enabling a topdown engineering methodology that aligns with IEC 61850. The paper details how OpenSCD is structured and emphasizes its capability to deliver a user-centric, guided engineering process.

The so-called Engineering Wizard plugin aims to simplify the engineering workflow, enhance reusability, validate interoperability and support the broader adoption of IEC 61850 across the energy sector. Beyond engineering, it supports academic and industrial training by simplifying complex concepts and offering a hands-on, transparent environment for training.
