Summary

This study examines the development of sustainability disclosure practices in the electric power sector between 2010 and 2025, with particular attention to regulatory changes and stakeholder views to bridge gaps in understanding within this field. We conduct a scientometric and bibliometric examination of Scopus-indexed literature, employing performance analysis, coword mapping, and co-citation networks to identify thematic development and intellectual origins. The findings indicate an increase in scholarly production after 2015, propelled by international climate initiatives, with shifts in focus from corporate social responsibility (CSR) to comprehensive reporting and disclosure of climate-related risks. Nevertheless, geographical examination underscores a continuing disparity, as Europe and North America hold a predominant position in the discourse, whereas South Asia, Africa, and Latin America are inadequately included owing to structural obstacles. Forecasting via Holt’s linear exponential smoothing predicts a future emphasis on policy-aligned research, particularly regulatory preparedness and stakeholder trust mechanisms. The study delivers a sector-specific synthesis of sustainability disclosure trends, connecting academic rigor with actionable insights for utilities and policymakers. Through the analysis of the intellectual structure and the prediction of future trends, we establish a framework for improving transparency and legitimacy in power sector infrastructure, thus bridging essential gaps in both developed and developing economies.

The results highlight the necessity for customised disclosure structures corresponding to local regulatory environments and the demands of stakeholders, with India’s BRSR framework in nationally adapted disclosure design.
