Summary
EDF HYDRO initiated the implementation of an Eco-Design project in 2022. The project was structured around five internal working groups tasked with defining technical requirements and specifications for the main technical domains of hydro-utility activities (control systems, electrical engineering, civil works, construction site activities, mechanics and steel). The overarching objective is to reduce the environmental impact associated with these activities.

As part of this project, tools have been developed to estimate greenhouse gas emissions. To date, the tools, the initial life cycle assessment results, and the working group analyses consistently indicate that the dominant contributions are associated with the procurement of steel, copper, and concrete. Steel is primarily used for reinforcement bars in civil structures, structural steelwork and cranes, and it is also used in major electrical equipment (transformers and hydraulic power units), including both stationary and rotating components.
Within this framework, the Electrical Engineering working group has updated the initial greenhouse gas estimation tool for generators and transformers. In parallel, it has proposed requirements and specific procurement criteria aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, in alignment with the activities of the steel working group.
Eco-Design measures are required to remain consistent with the project business plan. Although such measures may generate long-term benefits, Eco-Design requirements may be withdrawn if the estimated final cost is considered unacceptable.
