Summary

The optimised design of the insulators from insulator coordination point of view may be obtained by accurate estimate about the pollution severity and by accurate estimate of the expected insulator strength at that pollution condition. CIGRE JWG C4/A3/B2/B4.75” Guide to procedures for the creation of contamination maps required for outdoor insulation coordination”, concentrates on the first item: pollution severity estimate. The aims of the WG are to define the pollution severity of each site (SPS), possibly univocally and to analyse how to translate the SPS to AC/DC energised insulators of different geometrical characteristics and material, with the final aim to give general guidelines to build up a pollution map. While the work is proceeding, preliminary information about the work going on is here presented.

The work started by collecting and summarizing the past worldwide mapping experience. Then the procedure proposed to arrive at pollution mapping is underlined. In principle pollution mapping should consider many factors and among others the type of energization (AC or DC) and the insulator geometry. Since it is deemed not possible to develop independently pollution maps for each of the above conditions, the solution proposed is to develop the Site Pollution

Severity (SPS) map for a reference condition, consisting of glass and porcelain cap-and-pin insulators, in vertical position, not energized and then to define correction factors to translate the reference SPS map to each of the above conditions.
