Summary

As Inverter Based Resources (IBRs) are integrated into power systems, it is necessary to conduct accurate studies of increasingly larger power systems (with several 1000s of buses).

Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) simulation is the most accurate modelling technique available at present for this purpose. The integration of IBRs increases the number of fast switching devices that complicate the task of EMT modeling. Current commercial-grade EMT simulators use Central Processing Unit (CPU) based algorithms to solve the network equations.

In this paper Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) are used to solve the network equations, and a considerable speedup is achieved compared to existing methods. The paper also demonstrates a fully fledged GPU-based EMT simulator using the example of a synthetic grid.
