Summary

Electricity markets are increasingly complex, placing greater scrutiny on the optimization models that underpin market clearing. This paper proposes a methodological framework for reviewing and strengthening unit commitment and redispatch models, focusing on the

Colombian market operated by XM. The framework aims to enhance numerical stability, reduce computation times, and improve mathematical conditioning—while preserving optimal dispatch results.

The approach integrates automated testing, numerical diagnostics, and structural reformulation.

Key techniques include constraint scaling, presolve analysis, solver parameter tuning, and model restructuring. An automated benchmarking environment built with Python and GAMS evaluates historically challenging cases, providing systematic insights into performance and robustness.

Results show significant gains in computational efficiency and model reliability, supporting more transparent and resilient market operations. By aligning with best practices in power system optimization, this work offers a replicable methodology for system operators seeking to modernize their market tools and meet evolving regulatory and operational demands.
