Summary

In order to gradually minimize prolonged exposure to magnetic field generated by power-lines and related infrastructures, in 2003 Italian Government introduced for new exposures the quality target of 3 T (L. 36/2001 [2] and D.P.C.M. 08/07/2003 [3]) and defined respect width as the space where magnetic field value generated by electric infrastructures is equal or greater than the quality target and where the presence of any location where people are supposed to stay for 4 hours or more per day is forbidden. Subsequently, in 2008 a methodology to calculate respect width was defined, introducing a simplified representation of it, called DPA, useful, as well, as criteria for territory planning [5] [24].

If methodology and parameters required for calculation of DPA are well defined from

Legislation for power lines, following technical standards, it is not the same for Substations, where indeed legislation only says: "for this type of plant, the DPA and, therefore, the Respect

Width generally falls within the boundaries pertaining to the plant itself. However, if the competent authority deems it necessary, the DPA relating to the perimeter elements (e.g.

portals, bars, etc.) must be calculated". Moreover, DPA calculation within Substation boundaries is relevant also for workers, for whom occupational exposure limits may not always be directly applicable depending on their tasks.

According to this scenario, this paper defines conditions to take into account to model DPA for a 380/150–132 kV Substation as well as an innovative and simplified methodology to derive it, compared with more detailed 3D analyses carried out with a commercial software.
