Summary

The paper describes a novel method for the detection of iso-butene and thus the evaluation of degradation of antioxidants in inhibited mineral oil or ester by means of dissolved gas analysis.

The method makes use of an established procedure in IEC 60567 and is applicable for all type hindered phenolic antioxidants. Some preliminary conclusions concerning the evolvement of iso-butene from inhibited mineral oil and synthetic ester at ageing in open and closed systems at different temperatures in the presence or absence of copper and paper have been done using a laboratory setup. These results have been correlated to the acidity in the aged liquid and the degradation of the inhibitor by means of high pressure liquid chromatography. Additional experimental work is needed in order to investigate the temperature influence on the isobutene generation and its connection to the phenolic inhibitor degradation.
