Summary

In modern power system, SCADA-based automation demands precise time synchronization across all devices for accurate monitoring, control, and event analysis. Any mismatch in time can lead to errors in data interpretation, protection relay coordination, and control execution.

To maintain data integrity and operational reliability, synchronized time across IEDs, RTUs, and servers is essential. During grid disturbances, equipment tripping, or protection scheme analysis, accurate time-stamped data is crucial. If sensors, IEDs, RTUs, or SCADA servers are not synchronized with a central GPS source, the analysis can be compromised.

Since no commercial product currently offers real-time monitoring of device time synchronization, we developed a custom solution in collaboration with an OEM. This includes both hardware and software, enabling centralised time monitoring of all devices through a unified dashboard. The solution tracks the SNTP Packets in the Network and compares the

IEDs time with Global Reference Time. Results of the comparison are shown in the Dashboard.

IEDs with Time Deviation above certain Threshold are Highlighted in the Dashboard.
