Summary

Access to electricity has been deemed essential to furthering socio-economic development and is regarded as an important input factor to achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Currently more than 1.4 billion people worldwide lack access to electricity. In Sub-Saharan Africa this affects 70% of the population, in rural areas an estimated 85%.
