Summary

Voltage harmonics distortions are frequency-domain representations of the time-domain waveform occurrences which may increase the peak, root mean square, and average of the applied voltage. The harmonics distortions have an impact on insulation systems regarding losses, lifetime, and dielectric material degradation. Partial discharge properties are important to be considered in the insulation diagnostics. Hence, the correlation between the harmonic content and partial discharge properties should be defined to reflect the partial discharge condition properly. This research is focused on observing the inception time of partial discharge for varied electrode shape when the supply voltage contains harmonic distortions. Five types of electrode configuration used as the test object are needle-plate, needle-sphere, needle-rod, plate-plate, and sphere-sphere. The harmonic distortions will be adjusted in both order and level of distortion. The order harmonic distortions are generated for individual and combination harmonics. The individual harmonics are 3rd, 5th, and 7th while the combination harmonics are the combination of 3rd, 5th, and 7th harmonic order. The two-level total harmonic distortion of 2% and 7% will be applied to every individual and combination harmonic. Furthermore, all measurement schemes will be implemented under equalized root means square voltage. The partial discharge measurement is conducted using partial discharge detector connected to the oscilloscope. The voltage source applied is 15 kV. The timer is used to measure the time of inception partial discharge occurred since the supply voltage generated. The Partial Discharge data are collected only at the inception of Partial Discharge detected. Personal Computer (PC) based signal generator is used to generate the voltage harmonics distortion. The PC based signal generator consists of several devices such as a Personal Computer, DC power supply, power amplifier and transformer. The result shows that the voltage harmonic distortion can affect the inception time of partial discharge. The distortion, for both individual and combination harmonics, may accelerate the inception time of Partial Discharge produced.
