Summary

It is nowadays increasingly common for cable systems to have parts of rating studies to be performed using FE, most notably in situations where IEC 60287 does not easily allow the problem to be solved. The number of users solving cable ratings via FE is much higher than in the past, and their specific experience is (on average) less than would have been the case 15 years ago.

On this basis WG B1.87 has been setup to provide a guidance for FEM users dealing with current rating calculations.

The work provides guidance covering all aspects of the finite element modelling process. It also includes recommendations on how to verify that the model is performing as intended. The Technical Brochure, which is about to be published, is completed by a set of six case studies which cover a wide variety of different installation types.
