Summary
In Europe and North America, restrictions and bans on SF₆ and other high global warming potential (GWP) gases in power switchgear are accelerating, driving demand for SF6-free solutions with lower environmental impact. We have selected a CO₂/O₂ gas mixture composed of natural-origin components as an alternative and are developing Gas-Insulated Switchgear
Read more Read less(GIS) based on this mixture.
Fundamental studies on electrical properties and material evaluations have confirmed the feasibility of applying this mixture to extra-high voltage (EHV) class GIS. This paper reports on the advantages of the CO₂/O₂ mixture and presents verification test results for key GIS components, including a 420 kV gas-insulated bus (GIB) and a metal-oxide surge arrester
(MOSA), as well as a 300 kV gas circuit breaker (CB), disconnecting switch (DS), and earthing switch (ES).
The 420 kV GIB/MOSA have successfully passed all type tests in accordance with IEC standards, thereby demonstrating satisfactory adequate operational performance. The 300 kV
CB has achieved a breaking capability of 63 kA while maintaining a footprint comparable to that of existing equipment. DS and ES were tested under JEC and IEC-compliant conditions, confirming that GIS components employing the CO2/O2 gas mixture can be realized in dimensions equivalent to SF₆-based equipment. By appropriately assembling these components, the main section of a double-bus 300 kV GIS single line can be transported as a single unit from the factory to the installation site within practical size and weight limits.
