Summary

This paper introduces vacuum generator circuit breakers (VGCBs) and vacuum generator breaker systems (VGBS) as robust, eco-friendly solutions that adhere to IEC/IEEE 62271-37013 standards, providing reliable protection for power plants and critical equipment. Vacuum technology is recognized for its high reliability, minimal maintenance requirements, elimination of the need for additional capacitors to deal with steep transient recovery voltage

(TRV), negligible global warming potential (GWP below 1), and extended operational life in comparison with other arc quenching alternatives such as SF6, fluoroketone and fluoronitrile that are banned or remain subject to further regulatory scrutiny. The aforementioned attributes of VGCBs and VGBS position them as leading technologies for sustainable and efficient power system operation.

The paper details the implementation of a VGCB model within an electromagnetic transient

(EMT) Integrated Network Calculation tool. This user-friendly, model-based simulation tool supports comprehensive transmission and distribution network studies and builds upon an existing EMT text-based simulation engine, which is a well-proven commercial software used by various institutions and in use for GCB applications for more than a decade. The model enables precise sizing and performance evaluation of VGCBs under diverse network conditions supporting detailed analysis of fault clearing capabilities and operational reliability. The simulation results from two software platforms show consistent and reliable modeling of generator circuit breaker performance under various conditions. The models closely match in current calculations, confirming their accuracy and compliance with international standards.

This supports the use of advanced simulation tools for validating protection schemes and equipment selection in power plants, ensuring system reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance
