Summary

To mitigate the high GWP of SF6 in the high-voltage industry, eco-efficient technology for high-voltage circuit breakers has been developed to contribute to the sustainable grid. Hitachi

Energy launched the world’s first 550 kV 63 kA SF6-free circuit breaker at CIGRE conference in 2024 and successfully delivered this SF6-free 550 kV Dead Tank Breaker (DTB) to customers in April 2025. During the same period, the world’s first 550 kV 63 kA SF6-free circuit breaker for Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) has been announced by Hitachi Energy.

This paper will introduce the newly developed 550 kV SF6-free metal enclosed circuit breaker.

In summary, the development and delivery of the SF6-free 550 kV circuit breaker is a major milestone in the high-voltage industry to prove the scalability of the eco gas mixture covering voltage levels from sub-transmission to transmission networks. These advancements have paved the way for extending the environmentally friendly technologies to future ultra-highvoltage ratings.
