Summary

With efforts to reduce the global warming effect caused by SF6 gas leakage, CO2-based gas mixtures are utilized as a feasible replacement of SF6 in gas-insulated switchgears so far.

Differences of thermal and dielectric properties between SF6 and CO2-based mixtures bring technical challenges to circuit breaker development. Comparative tests and CFD calculations were arranged to examine the performance differences of test circuit breaker using SF6 and

C4F7N/CO2 gas mixtures, respectively. Dielectric recovery performances in interruptions at various current levels were studied. Variation of pressure and temperature in heating chamber and mass flow rate through specified cross sections were calculated with CFD method. Faster rate of pressure drop and shorter effective time period of gas blast after interruption of

C4F7N/CO2 circuit breaker compared to SF6-type are found to be the main cause for the restrike in large-current interruption.
