Summary
The digital monitoring solution for sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) in Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) is a product driven by the common goal of reducing environmental impact of greenhouse gas leakages by the energy and utilities sector. The Norwegian TSO developed a centralized trend monitoring solution of SF6 pressure for GIS stations in 2022 where live time series data from pressure sensors were used and visualized in a web dashboard. The solution and background are presented [2]. The dashboard provides both historical and near real time insights, which allows for replacement of manual inspections using pen, paper and no online tools. Achieving the transition from technical go-live to sustained operational maturity requires a strategic focus on long term user adoption. The user adoption journey of a monitoring dashboard is assessed through the five stages of adoption framework. Key success factors are data quality assurance, proactive support and continuous showcasing operational value.

Three maturity pillars are identified throughout our journey to succeed in the transition from sensors to dashboards. Product maturity should ideally be at a level allowing anomaly detection and troubleshooting across the entire value chain. Organizational maturity requires the adaptation of internal routines to support digital workflows. Finally, ensuring optimal ownership establishes clear accountability between technical IT and asset maintenance teams throughout the activities in the value chain from sensor to dashboard and back to an actionable task. The evolution of technologies in GIS equipment and future SF6-free alternatives leans toward higher operating pressures, consequently increasing the risk of leakage through enclosures and multiple sealing interfaces. This trend enhances the need for continuous digital monitoring solutions along with strategic reduction actions for both SF6-free technologies and the aging fleet of equipment.
