Summary

C4FN-based mixtures have significantly lower global warming potentials than SF6, and are known to achieve insulation performance similar to SF6 when the filling pressure is increased. However, breaking performance is known to be significantly lower than that of

SF6. Therefore, when developing SF6-free GIS, the characteristics of alternative gases must be carefully considered and incorporated into product development.

Korean power utilities began introducing SF6-free 170kV 50kA GIS in 2022 and are steadily increasing the rate of conversion to SF6-free GIS.

This paper presents the development of an SF6-free 170kV 50kA GIS utilizing a spring operating mechanism to reduce its carbon footprint and global warming potential (GWP). It also presents environmental test procedures and data acquisition procedures simulating low and high temperature environments.
