Summary
Transmission utilities are increasingly transitioning from time-based maintenance strategies towards condition-based and predictive asset management to enhance system reliability and optimize maintenance expenditure. Circuit breakers remain among the most critical assets in high-voltage substations, yet their condition is traditionally assessed only during scheduled outages. This paper presents the design, development, field deployment, and validation of an in-house Circuit Breaker Online Monitoring System (CBOMS) developed by TNB Research for application within the Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) transmission grid. The CBOMS continuously monitors mechanical, electrical, and dielectric parameters using selected sensors and intelligent algorithms. Field results from multiple substations demonstrate stable performance, vendor-agnostic compatibility, and significant operational and economic benefits, validating the feasibility of a scalable, cost-effective online monitoring solution for transmission utilities.
