Summary
The static design rating of an overhead line is determined with the well-known heat balance equation from CIGRE [1]. The input for this calculation is typically based on conservative assumptions regarding the ambient temperature, effective wind speed and solar irradiation. Grid congestion issues in the Netherlands have introduced the need to increase the static ratings of overhead lines, resulting in the exploration of alternative approaches to determine the static design rating. For this, historical weather data has been analysed.
Read more Read lessA first step was to investigate a higher static input wind speed in the CIGRE601 calculation, and although this provided an additional 10% to 15% static capacity, this did not resolve the complete need for higher current ratings of many connections in the Dutch grid. Therefore, a more sophisticated method was developed, using localized weather conditions for each high voltage line using the ERA5 climate reanalysis dataset [2]. The heat balance equation from
CIGRE601[1] is then used to calculate the hourly maximum current capacity for each line over a span of more than 40 years. Next, the year-round hourly values for the overhead lines were determined using an adjusted form of the Hourly Rolling Window climatology method [5], resulting in the Year Rating Curve (YRC).
The application of the YRC in long term planning and in system operation is currently being explored, where the first steps and results already seem to confirm its usefulness.
