Summary

This paper presents two experimental and analytical studies related to overhead line (OHL) foundations. First, the three‑dimensional (3D) bearing capacity of shallow foundations was evaluated through centrifuge model tests and 3D finite‑element (FE) simulations. For the investigated cases, the full-scale FE analyses gave ultimate loads of 287 kN in soft ground and 422 kN in stiff ground, while the Terzaghi-based design formula gave 281 kN and 409 kN, respectively. The difference was therefore 2.1–3.2% for the two analysed ground conditions.

Second, the effectiveness of liquefaction countermeasures using top‑shaped concrete blocks was investigated by shaking-table tests with three cases: (1) a conventional thin gravel base layer, (2) an increased gravel base thickness only, and (3) top-shaped blocks with gravel base.

Under 3 Hz sinusoidal input with incremental acceleration, liquefaction occurred at 200 Gal in

Cases 1 and 2, whereas the block-improved case remained stable up to 250 Gal and showed smaller settlement and horizontal displacement.

These results quantify the difference between the Terzaghi-based formula and the 3D FE results for the investigated cases and indicate, within the tested range, that the top-shaped block system reduced liquefaction-induced deformation of the shallow foundation.
