Summary

This paper presents the investigations related to various DC switchyard schemes that can be employed in a Multiterminal VSC HVDC (MTDC) system using Hybrid HVDC Breaker

(HHB) as DC Circuit Breaker (DCCB) for flexible and reliable MTDC system operation. Nonfault current blocking VSC converter topology based on half bridge modules (HB-MMC) using

IGBTs is widely used and is considered in the performance evaluation of DC switchyard scheme. The investigation presented in this paper covers the following aspects: consequent impacts after a contingency, availability, CAPEX, and ease of future expansion. Based on the study investigation, a comparative analysis is presented and discusses the DC switchyard scheme that is cost-effective and achieve high reliable performance during contingencies. The proposed method would assist strategically in identifying the suitable DC switchyard scheme during the planning stage of MTDC system while allowing for staged development and future expansion.
