Summary

Rapid digitalization and continued growth of HVDC systems create an opportunity to realize value through Digital Twins (DTw), despite current implementations remaining at relatively low maturity levels. This paper proposes a practical definition of an HVDC Digital Twin and introduces a five-level maturity model aligned with ISO/IEC 30186:2025. Representative

HVDC DTw use cases are mapped to each maturity level to illustrate how capabilities, value drivers, and decision-support functions evolve as maturity increases. The concepts presented build on foundational work developed within CIGRÉ Working Group B4.104 and are intended to support owners, operators, and technology providers in assessing current implementations and guiding future development of HVDC Digital Twins.
