Summary

This paper investigates the application of the IEC 61850 communication standard to High

Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems, with a focus on real-time monitoring and protection using a digital wideband Direct-Current Current Transformer (DCCT). As HVDC grids expand, there is a growing need for standardized, interoperable communication solutions capable of supporting fast and reliable data exchange for protection and monitoring functions.

While IEC 61850 is well established in AC systems, its application to DC systems remains limited due to the lack of a standardized DC-specific application profile. To address this gap, the paper presents an adapted Sampled Values (SV) data model based on the UCA 9-2LE framework, tailored to DCCT measurements. An extended data set is proposed that provides application-specific signals for protection, control, energy metering, and DC monitoring.

By performing signal processing within the publisher, the proposed approach enables operation at relatively low SV sampling rates while still meeting stringent timing requirements. A digital

DCCT integrating high-speed signal acquisition, advanced digital filtering, and IEC 61850 communication services is implemented and experimentally validated. The results demonstrate high accuracy, sub-microsecond time synchronization, and predictable communication delays suitable for HVDC applications.
