Summary

The cable metal sheath grounding system is a crucial component of high-voltage cable lines, consisting of metal sheaths, terminal tail pipes, joint copper shells, grounding wires, grounding boxes, as well as components such as sealing leads and bolts between them. Poor connections pose hidden risks to safe operation and, in severe cases, may lead to cable breakdown.

This paper proposes a method for diagnosing the connection status of metal sheaths through live detection of loop resistance. A detection device has been developed based on the principle of "DC + heterodyne frequency coupling." The testing process does not require line outages or changes to the grounding method. Over 17,000 on-site tests have been conducted, identifying defects in 860 instances. Diagnostic criteria have been refined based on the collected field data. Practical application has demonstrated the effectiveness of this detection method, providing a new diagnostic technology for the operation and maintenance of cable metal sheath grounding systems, with significant potential for broader promotion and application.
