Summary

Polypropylene offers the advantage of increased transmission capacity due to its insulation strength, which is comparable to that of commercially used cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), as well as its superior heat resistance. Additionally, since polypropylene does not require crosslinking or drying processes during manufacturing, it contributes to carbon reduction by lowering power consumption.

In this study, 154 kV power cable was developed using polypropylene insulation material that provides insulation performance equal to or better than XLPE and offers high thermal resistance, enabling increased current capacity. The cable system has successfully passed type and longterm reliability tests in accordance with IEC 60840 standard and relevant specifications at 110 ℃ during the tests.

The evaluation results confirm that polypropylene (PP)-insulated cables offer enhanced thermal endurance, allowing for higher admissible current compared to conventional XLPE-insulated cables. Additionally, the improved thermal performance enables the use of conductors with reduced cross-sectional area, contributing to cost savings in cable manufacturing and installation.

During cable installation, it is essential to follow construction guidelines that account for the insulation material’s characteristics and the mechanical properties associated with the higher conductor operating temperature. Accordingly, mechanical constant values for the 154 kV polypropylene-insulated cable were derived through thermal cycle testing at a conductor operating temperature of 110 °C. Based on these results, new construction standards were established, and the cable system, including cables and joint boxes, was installed in the

Republic of Korea in accordance with these standards.

The 154 kV project aims to supply power to an industrial complex. Consequently, test operation and field performance evaluations under actual operating conditions are planned in the near future.
